The University was founded in 1916 by the great social reformer and visionary, Bharatratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve whose aim of life was women’s education and their empowerment.
Our college is a place of higher education, recognized by University Grants Commission of India and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India (B++). The aim is to empower women in the true sense of the term. We encourage you to engage with our extraordinary family by sharing with you the updates and exciting programs organized by our various departments.
Dr. Muktaja V. Mathkari
Established in 1968, our college is a part of one of the oldest University for women, the one and only one in India and in South East Asia. The college shares great reformatory tradition and heritage. It focuses on women’s enlightenment, their resultant strengthening and self actualization.
Our renowned specializations prepare knowledgeable and wise students who are skilled and employable as during internship (mandatory for all specializations) itself most of the students are selected for various positions in industries, clinics, hospitals, health and community centers. They also generate employment.
We inspire next generation teachers, community workers, NGO directors, textile and interior designers, nutritionists and dietitians and above all researchers and entrepreneurs.
The college is a partner in Green Initiative with Institute of Natural History Education and Research (INHER). Outreach and academic programs are conducted in association with Janaseva Foundation an internationally reputed NGO. Schemes like National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Schemes (NSS) form the crucial part of the learning activity of the students. The industry academia linkages are also formed. Eco Factory Foundation and Pravin Masalewale are such examples. Research aptitude is inculcated through these linkages. The college is home for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Indian Dietetics Association (IDA), Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) [AFST (I)] and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in association with which various curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular and research activities are undertaken. The students’ projects provide data and at times, recommendations to government organizations in order to improve quality of life. Student/ cultural exchange program with Hague University is also proposed.
The diverse and applied nature of specializations aims at facilitating the local, national and global societies as ours is the only college in Pune, India which offers skill and need based UG and PG degrees and diplomas in Home Science. We encourage practical application of knowledge and skill for empowerment.
We are the pioneers in the field of Home Science studies, a constituent college of a University with a special constitutional status. We have passionately launched a campaign ‘Celebrating Womanhood’ to study Woman at work, at home and in travel. The students learn to go beyond the texts and practise community engagement. We focus on sensitization programs, so as to make students understand societies, culture and culture specificities and respect the difference and thereby ‘make a difference’ by becoming ‘glocal citizens’. Our prestigious alumni are spread all over the world and bring laurels to the Nation.
Quality enhancement and excellence are our focus and we inculcate commitment, consistency and sincerity among students. We are committed to high quality of teaching and industriousness. Our staff maintains very healthy interpersonal relationships with students and prepares them for coming to terms with life with a wider perspective on life in the present global scenario and for becoming ‘able, balanced, multifaceted personalities’ to define happiness and success in their own terms. Our alumni also stay connected to us by contributing to their Alma matter through various activities.
The Laboratory School of Human Development department and the Organic Edible Garden are our pride and unique best practices.
